New European teaching materials for inland waterway transport

Over the past 3,5 years a consortium of fifteen partners has worked hard to provide educational materials for teaching at Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) education and training institutes. The consortium, which collaborated in project ‘COMPETING’, paved the way for the introduction of competency based future-proof education for (upcoming) crew members throughout the European Union.

The project delivered E-learning materials, course manuals, an European Training Record Book, video’s to recruit and attract new students and a Quality Assurance and Quality Control system.

COMPETING was formed by eleven IWT education & training institutes and four social partners from the IWT sector. It was for the first time, that on a European level, all key stakeholders cooperated to develop European wide recognised and modern curricula and teaching materials for the IWT sector. The project responded to changes made in the Directive 2397/2017 which lays down the competences of crew members who work on European interconnected waterways and arranges the recognition of qualifications for IWT-crew on a European level.

‘’For the harmonisation of all inland navigation education and training the COMPETING deliverables are very important,’’ says president Arjen Mintjes of EDINNA, the network of European education and training institutes in inland navigation. ‘’I’m very pleased with all the materials delivered by the COMPETING project, and I expect all EDINNA members will make use of them.’’

‘’So far we only received very positive feedback from managers and teachers at IWT education and training institutes. The materials will help them to update and further improve their education. Harmonised and future-proof education contributes to not only the mobility on the European labour market, but also to more safety on the European inland waterways.’’ reacts Jan Smallegange of Rotterdam based STC Group as project manager of COMPETING.

In the COMPETING project, teaching materials accompanying the seven chapters describing the competencies on Operational and Management level were made. These include navigation, operation of the craft, cargo handling, stowage and passenger transport, marine engineering and electrical, electronical and control engineering, maintenance and repair, communication and health, safety and environmental protection.

All outcomes can be downloaded at this website (under downloads) and at the website of EDINNA. At 13 October 2022 the project organises an online seminar for managers and teachers at IWT education and training institutes. All outcomes will be presented and explained during this seminar.

End conference COMPETING – 14 June 2022

Join the final conference of COMPETING on the 14th of June in Rotterdam!

Register now for the end conference COMPETING via: https://lnkd.in/e3brmziX.

We would like to invite you for the final conference of COMPETING, with the theme ‘a big step forward in Inland Navigation Education and Training’.This conference takes place at STC Group in Rotterdam and will simultaneously be held online.

A quality line-up of international experts will address the outcomes of the COMPETING project from different perspectives and also celebrate the European cooperation in the field of inland waterway transport education and training.

A consortium of eleven European inland navigation educational institutions and four social partners joined forces to work hard on the seven competency areas and its accompanying teaching materials, like course manuals and a European Training Record Book, both at operational and management level. The project has also yielded a well thought-off quality assurance system.

After three and a half years of hard work, the end conference will be the place to be for those who would like to get up to speed with the end results, including the products which make this Erasmus+ Sector Skills Alliance project all the more interesting.

We plan to host a physical meeting at the headquarter of STC Group in Rotterdam, supported by live stream facilities.

Online seminar COMPETING – 7 April 2022

All inland waterway navigation schools and training institutes please pay attention! We would like to invite you to the first online seminar about the outcomes of project COMPETING. During this seminar we will explain how to adapt or adopt the new and harmonised inland navigation educational material.
The last three years a consortium of various European Inland navigation educational institutions and social partners joined forces to work on seven competencies and the accompanying teaching materials, both at operational and management level. The competencies include navigation, ship operation, cargo handling, stowage and passenger transport, maritime engineering and electrical, electronical and control engineering, maintenance and repair, communication and health, and safety and environmental protection.

In the coming months we are organising several online seminars to inform you about the developed educational material and to guide you on how you can adapt or adopt it.
This event is especially relevant for those who are responsible for the curricula or lesson content at inland navigation schools and training institutions.

Join the online seminar on 7 April at 12.00 CET via this link.

After the seminar we will share the video registration online.

Students learn to connect inland training ships according to new European directive

Students from the Maritime Academy Harlingen have followed practical lessons to connect the training ships Princess Máxima and Amalia. With these practical lessons and the administration of a digital exam for the theory, the Maritime Academy Harlingen already complies with the new European directive ES-Qin OL 1.1.2 Navigation for inland shipping, which will come into effect in January 2021.

When docked, the training ships Princess Máxima and Amalia are connected together as a close-knit assembly, so that they can continue sailing as one. “Safety, collaboration and communication are essential when performing this task”, says Arjen Mintjes, director of the Maritime Academy Harlingen. “Pupils learn in practice what to pay attention to and how to perform their tasks safely.”

The coming months COMPETING will deliver EU harmonised lesson material and course manuals that can help inland navigation schools and training institutions to give their education in line with the new directive.
