Health and safety and environmental protection

On operational level this covers the knowledge and skills related to the following main tasks of the boatman:

  • The boatman should be able to adhere to safe working rules, understand the importance of health and safety rules and the importance of the environment regulations.
  • The boatman should be able to acknowledge the importance of training aboard and act immediately in the event of an emergency.
  • The boatman should be able to take precautions to prevent fire and must be able to use the firefighting equipment correctly.
  • The boatman should be able to perform duties concerning the environment.

On management level this covers the knowledge and skills related to the following main tasks of the boatmaster:

  • The boatmaster should be able to monitor the applicable legal requirements and take measures to ensure the safety of life.
  • The boatmaster should be able to maintain safety and security for persons on board including direct assistance to disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility in accordance with the training requirements and instructions of Annex IV of Regulation (EU) No 1177/2010.
  • The boatmaster should be able to set up emergency and damage control plans, and handle emergency situations.
  • The boatmaster shouldbe able to ensure compliance with requirements for environmental protection.
